  Academic Background

Stuart obtained a first class honours degree in medicinal & pharmaceutical chemistry, going on to obtain his PhD in neuropharmacology.  During his time working in the pharmaceutical industry he also gained a distinction in the diploma of clinical sciences. Stuart also holds the professional qualification of Chartered Chemist.

  Business Experience

Stuart worked in the pharmaceutical industry for more than 18 years. After starting in clinical research he later assumed a technical support/educational role to clinicians and healthcare professionals.  He also provided internal training support to sales and marketing staff, was an active member of numerous cross-functional teams and maintained links as a visiting lecturer and presenter at a local University.

  Music & Arts Experience

Stuart started playing drums at 19, taking up world percussion some 10 years later.  Over the years he has worked, played sessions and recorded with a wide range of bands; locally, nationally and internationally.  His CD, Soundscapes, using nearly 100 different percussion instruments (plus a few melodic ones) was released to critical acclaim in 1998.  The year 2002 saw fulfilment of another project with publication of Friendship is a Verb (in a hurting world), a book of poetry and thoughts on friendships and relationships, written by Stuart after a period of serious illness.

His playing experience includes

• Support, touring and recording sessions for numerous artists and bands in a range of styles (including world, R&B, soul, acoustic, pop, rock, folk, ceilidh, traditional, jazz)
• Working with dance groups and other artists (performing arts and creative arts)
• Band member formerly with The Harbour Lights, currently with One Big Sky

However, Stuart does not restrict his playing to bands.  He also runs workshops for all ages, inspiring and encouraging others to discover their own creativity.  If required, he can combine his science background with his industry and music experience to create workshops which go deeper than simple enjoyment, meeting very specific needs for a broad range of customers from different backgrounds.

In church, Stuart has wide experience playing in worship and performance settings.  His experience in this arena includes:

• Psalm Drummers: Stuart played during the Calling All Nations event in July 2006 at the Olympiastadion, Berlin.  He was also one of five drummers involved in the 2005 procession and enthronement of Rev Dr John Sentamu as Archbishop of York
• Spring Harvest:  Member of a resident worship band and also as member of other visiting and resident performance bands
• The UK Willow Creek Band

He has also studied extensively on the role of rhythm in worship from a biblical perspective and is able to integrate this into workshops as required.

Stuart's passion for speaking, teaching and for people has seen him engaged as a local preacher and he was in church leadership for over 15 years.  His broad life experience means that he can often bring a new perspective to situations, including music and worship. He is well known for his honesty, empathy and sensitivity and as an excellent and engaging speaker.

Stuart is equally at home in schools, businesses or churches.  His passion for the extensive range of percussion instruments he plays guarantees a captivating, fun and educational experience.
